A sail that sailors dream of

After a couple of weeks sailing Belize’s southern cays and returning again and again to friendly Placencia for communications, grocieries, cappucino gelato, and Brenda’s bbq chicken, we feel its time to take the cruiser’s option and blow town, to sail out to the barrier reef and sail north along it, sampling as many cays and reefs as possible. Robin is going to a magic women’s gathering in Mexico and we must be in Belize City in nine days for her to make her connections. Time to sail and explore some of the most beautiful and pristine cruising grounds on Earth! The prevailing winds here in Belize are the Trades and they blow from the north- east, and can be strong, 20-35 mph. Since Belize City lies 90 miles north of us, we’d generally be beating into it the whole way. Being that we’ll be sailing inside the barrier reef, we won’t be smashing into headseas, but still, we prefer to go with the flow rather than against it. As with so much we luck out, and leave Placencia with a light southerly that stays with us all the way out to the Queen Cays, about eighteen miles, where we spend the full moon anchored almost astride the reef. ~Fred~
